Crater Lake

Off the highway, I turned onto the road leading to Crater Lake, a flicker of worry igniting within me. The snow lining the road grew deeper, an unexpected sight but thankfully without any impending storms. The signs warning of tire chains heightened my concerns. If conditions worsened, I resolved to turn back. And if further… Continue reading Crater Lake

Leaving California

Shortly before I took this picture, gas was $6.18. About 15 miles later gas was $4.29. I guess I’ve crossed into the promised land.

Fighter jets

The fighter jets would start at 9AM and go through sundown. Sometimes they would buzz me so close my ears hurt. Often they would bank high and do other aerial tricks. They were always going fast and making lots of noise. You can actually see the jet wash. Once one passed, you could see flames.… Continue reading Fighter jets

Death Valley wild flowers

I didn’t believe the rangers that there were wild flowers in the death valley. They are covering the hills on the way to Beatty, as well as many other places. Its so windy here that I almost fell down twice. At least thats all I’m willing to admit.

Snowing?

Its snowing in death valley. This is a cholla cactus. You don’t want to touch it. Don’t ask me why. I don’t care to recall that the barbs are like fish hooks.

Racetrack

This is the famous death valley racetrack. I came here to see the sailing stones. This is looking south. The floor is dry and parched. Its very easy walking. The area is much bigger than I expected. There is nothing to the north, but now I am walking south. The sign says the sailing stones… Continue reading Racetrack

I guess its part of the experience

This morning I was sitting inside drinking coffee and this coyote walks past. It’s easily 60 pounds. Probably not dangerous by itself, if it really is by itself. Well at least there’s lots of rocks around.

Its time to run

I had the perfect campsite in death valley over looking badwater basin. In the early afternoon I saw a dust storm building. Which isn’t that big of a deal. Over the next couple hours it moved south. All of the sudden it turned black and to my horror I saw a lightning strike not far… Continue reading Its time to run

The Rainbow

Drinking coffee and reading a book is my happy time in the mornings. I am unwillingly distracted by the soft rythmic tapping of persistent raindrops on my windshield, Off in the distance is a beautiful rainbow connecting the upper and lower lake. As I’m setting up my tripod and camera, you slowly fade back into… Continue reading The Rainbow
